Your favourite ever County game ?

Postby neilcork68 » September 11th, 2017, 2:57 pm

For me its a choice of two.....Wealdstone away because its the last game I ever went to with my late dad...he supported the club for 60 years + and died a week before our Wembley trip. He would have given anything to be at that game

Or

Carl Zeiss Jena away.........yes I was one of the 20,000 who said they were there  I was only a kid at the time but that trip will live in my memory until the day I die.

There have been many great days and many many lows but those two stick out as my top one or two

What's Yours ????

For some reason I've always remembered
Newport county 4-3 Portsmouth -1979/80 season.

I remember the ticker tape they used and thought it looked great.

On another note , I can't think of a more significant result in our history than ;

Newport County 0-4 Orient. :-)

Not including the obvious historic games, Play off final, ECWC games, the match that always sticks in my mind is Wigan Home mid 80s when we put 5 past them with Nev Chamberlain and Aldo running amok.

The play off final was just such a great day plus Hereford away same season are the two games that instantly jump out at me so I guess it's those.

Other one was 1-1 v Notts County at Somerton Park in 1986 when I was a ball boy. Mardenborough scoring our goal.

Hereford away in the Conference promotion season.
The play-off final.
Merthyr away, boxing day, when we went 4-0 up in no time at all. Think we won 5-2.
Ilkeston at home, won 5-2.
Cardiff away in the Premier Cup on penalties would have been brilliant if they'd had any fans there.

5-3 mid 70's home to Northampton.

3-2 1967 v Wrexham.

2-0 away v Hereford April 1979.

2-1 v Bradford City. Mid 70's. Great last ten minutes.

5-1 v Histon. 2007?

3-2 v Barrow. 1970?

No particular order just games I remember really enjoying

I remember that Hereford away game , pretty sure we went to Peterborough the following day and won 1-0 as well.

It was in our run of 10 consecutive wins

The Northampton game was absolutely fantastic, and believe it was around New year 1977/8, I believe we were unbeaten at home up 'til then, and were trailing 1-3. One of the best performances I can recall, and Howard Goddard nodding in the 5th from a John Relish run and cross.....Classy recovery

Apart from the obvious Notts County game last season, two matches really stick out for me. The win at Hereford with Willmott scoring winner at our end in last couple of minutes. Also, for sheer agony/ecstacy rollercoaster the 4-3 win at Weston in penultimate match of season in Conference South Beadle era a while ago. We had played catch up after postponed games and the boys were knackered. Didn't seem to matter and we were strolling to a 3-0 lead. Suddenly it was 3-3 and we were looking destined to lose and promotion dream over. To a man everyone looked out on their feet when Sam O'Sullivan scored at the death in front of us away supporters. Cue pandemonium.

County 4-3 Pompey was my first game attended at Somerton Park and what a debut it was. Many of the matches already named above, especially Hereford away with two fine headers from Minshull and a cracker from Willmott but this one also at Walsall

May 1980.

Walsall 2 Newport 4.

The best County team I've seen was that season.

Loads of other memorable games though.

I'm getting on a bit so didn't notice Reebok had put the video up for the above game. The BBC reporter says we took 8000 to the game .... we took a good following but but there was only a crowd of just over 9,000 in the ground.

The Pompey 4-3 game has already been mentioned so I'll chuck in beating Big Ron's Cambridge 4-2 in 76/77 thanks to a Brian Clark hattrick
