This is a perennial topic. In the Sheffield United programme from January 1981, Len Ashurst opined that the then board were right in choosing to build a team rather than a new stand, which apparently had been the plan the previous year.

I agree with you, I would rather the club concentrated on building the infrastructure of the club. I think looking at the fortunes of a Cup windfall for Lincoln, who chose infrastructure, and Cambridge, who chosen players, amplifies this.

But it is a legitimate debate.
