Never really understood how an out of town stadium was going to be eco-friendly when people would have to drive to get there. Initial plans were for 5000 capacity but they haven't filled their current ground yet, and will only do so by giving over one home end to away fans. As soon as results show any sign of dropping off, they will be down to 2500.

It would be a great opportunity for them to actually do something instead of just saying it.
I have suggested this area before and historically the old Lovells Athletic ground, Rexville , was not very far away ( marked by the street called “ The Turnstiles “ ). Good option imho as very walkable from city centre.

AFC Wimbledon hope to crowdfund £7m towards new Plough Lane stadium

Good luck to them.
Not the worst idea attempting to crowd fund, various clubs have successfully managed it with smaller projects. Norwich raised 5M for a new training ground, Stevenage funded their new stand. If you are interested check out a company called Tifosy, run by Gianlica Vialli, they specialise in crowdfunding football teams.

I 've long been a critic of the so called councillors of Newport, for all the bullshit they've spoken of the boost that Newport County has given the business's of this town with their performances against big teams Leicester, Manchester City's and Middlesboro etc etc and how much County have done for business and the town--I counted 20 odd councillors named in the Argus and I then suggested that it would be about time the town did something for this club,in return, Sir Terry Mathews has been given (or assumed) permission to go ahead and expand the Colditz resort...….hoops sorry ,err... that maternity home place, that was......Even I was amazed how much it had grown when I last went past on the M4 yesterday ………….it is so big and ugly !!!, it looks like a cross between prison and a steel works----perhaps our councillors are too shy to question his highness. And while we are on the subject of our town, it'll be interesting to see what the ruggah chaps will do when they actually get into the development of Rodders….hotel and all!!!

You obviously haven’t seen or worked in many steelworks ?? That place - like it or lump it - provides very important jobs and much needed income in an otherwise pretty deprived area.

A lot of people spend a lot of money attending the "prison/steelworks", and lets not forget that it brought the prestigious Ryder Cup to Newport.

Re: New Stadium

I agree with Bob it's about time Newport councillors step up to the mark and stop chatting s__t .not having this either Terry Mathews as not done nothing for Newport apart from lining his own pockets. Every time the Ryder cup was mentioned it was in the vale of usk .and most of punters who were at the event were encouraged to go to Cardiff and spend there money . He can build what he wants and practically do what he wants .perhaps our football club are barking up the wrong tree here with the councillors? Let's take a leaf out of sir Terry's methods and line there pockets that way instead of chatting s--t all of time they might then actually take some action .

To the two people who seem to have taken my earlier post , steel works etc personally, I was NOT cricizing the steelworks or the wonderful prestigious ????? Ryder Cup, I am only interested in making a point for Newport County and even after making a packet out of the old County's home ground Somerton Park, they kindly provided a cut price "field" at Spytty, for the club and even then they knew damn well it was inadequate for league matches, and don't forget the club did reach the later stages of European football when we played Carl Ziese Jena,--.but the fact IS the city???? of Newport is a shambles compared with our neighbours . But thank you that last post for your supporting words...………….Bob Bassett

As fans of the club we can do our bit as well, by lobbying people at every opportunity. Invariably people who make the most noise get seen to first; we need to be shouting from the rooftops about the need for this at every possible opportunity.

Even York City, rotting away in the National League North, are in the middle of having a new stadium built for them at the moment which includes leisure and retail facilities which the whole community can benefit from. It doesn't need to be a football ground in isolation.

It really isn't that difficult a project to accomplish. Either the powers that be aren't pressing hard enough or it isn't seen as a priority. Either of those things can be changed with lobbying.

Why not use our collective clout to raise some funds? If Newport City Council won't help us, then one month out of every 9 for the next 3 years will be a self-declared council tax amnesty. 5,000 people donating £120 a time to a stadium fund would raise £600,000 every 9 months. If the council don't think it's important, let's show them how much we disagree. They're here to serve the people of this city, not the other way around.

Keep up OB - I wasn’t for one minute suggesting that you were criticising the steelworks or Ryder Cup but merely pointing out that like it or lump it the Celtic Manor is very important to this area of Newport whatever the means of it existing.

Perish the thought that the Council should ever consider something like the York City plan for us.
I mean, it more than 2 miles from the city centre on a retail park with few if any boozers.
For us it would have to be built on top of Friars Walk or stick it where the sun doesn't shine.
