When I edited the programme - for the last couple of seasons in the Conference - we were only too happy to mention births, deaths etc if people got in touch. My recollection is the club has always done this.
I think you should have made a significant contribution on or off the pitch to warrant silence/applause, but there's no reason why names shouldn't be read out without going the whole hog.
A couple of weeks ago I watched the highlights video for the inaugural season of 1989-90 and although I can't necessarily put names to faces, there are so many in the background who I know for certain are not with us any more or who demographically are very unlikely to be.
