As a child I remember reading, I think in the wonderfully entitled 'Charlie Buchan's Football Monthly' that England players got a cap for each appearance whereas Welsh and Scots got one cap per season with the badge(s) of the team(s) they had played crocheted into the cap.

It's nice to think some traditions last.

On the subject of Scotland football caps, there's a very telling and moving story regarding Stewart Imlach (FA Cup winner with Nottingham Forest in 1959) who won four international caps but never received one.

In his must read memoir of his father, Gary (Tour de France) Imlach writes of his fight to change the crazy rule that Scotland caps were only awarded for home internationals. Stewart played against Hungary, Poland , Yugoslavia and France, including two games at the World Cup finals in Sweden in 1958.
