Morecambe v Newcastle

Wednesday 23rd September.
Morecambe v Newcastle Utd.

After beating Watford, County have got to the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time in the their history, referring to both The Ironsides and The Exiles. If Morecambe were to beat Newcastle in this third round match, it'll be their first ever achievement of reaching round four of the League Cup. Morecambe and Newcastle have met only once previously for a competitive match. That was in 2013 / 2014 for a League Cup round two match which saw the Geordies win 2-0 at The Globe Arena with goals from the Ameobi brothers Shola and Sammy. The match attracted a record attendance of 5375 at The Globe Arena, nowadays known as The Mazuma Stadium, and still is a record attendance.

Would be interesting to know what Kevin Ellison's feelings are of this match. Would he prefer (1) his old pals of Morecambe make an eighth visit to Rodney Parade of which County have won only one of their previous seven visits (2) would he prefer some top names visit with Newcastle or (3) would he be neutral.
I'm all up for a Newcastle victory here and hopefully have the TV cameras at Rodney Parade plus we owe the Geordies one for the 13-0 thrashing of County just after WW2.

Some players, one whose name i'm sure is recognizable by many of you, who've had connections with both Morecambe and Newcastle United.

The Newcastle starting lineup tonight includes 8 players who were in the matchday squad for their most recent Premier League match with Brighton. Four of them were in the starting lineup for that match. Six of their 7 substitutes tonight were also in their last Premier League squad. So 14 of their 18 players tonight appear to be genuine first team squad members. Including our old friend Karl Darlow who is sub goalie.
