Bottom of the table Southend United are due to pay HMRC the thick end of half a million quid this week. They're not optimistic.

2I had an unexpected call to my mobile earlier today from a man purporting to be from HMRC saying my account was under investigation for fraud and all I had to do was........at this point I instructed him to go and f*** himself before hanging up.
Tactic for Southend maybe?

Yep had one few weeks back I told them I had to get a pen so I put kettle on kept going back to phone saying just a minute still looking did this for about 5 minutes then with my cuppa listening to what they where saying asked them to repeat pretending I couldn't hear and put phone on table shouting out to the Mrs who wasn't there to come and hear what they where saying took a few more minutes then told them to fook off the sigh was brilliant
Re: Southend facing another tough week
5I tend to get angry and show no subtlety but my wife (Mrs Branch) strung along the woman who rang saying ' I understand you've been in an accident ------ by crying falsely and apologising for killing the other driver! Very dark!
Good luck to Southend yet it happened to us ----

6I agree don’t get angry just play them along with the most ridiculous stories in can imagine.
I tell them that I was the one who died in the car accident, that usually has them stumped.
And as for loft insulation and double glazing tell them you’ve taken your roof off and bricked up your Windows

7I've done the "I'm afraid he's dead" one a few times. Once attributed it to a tiger escaped from a visiting circus.
Re: Southend facing another tough week
8Back to the topic, it's a shame that so many clubs are facing the same sort of problems. Bury, Macclesfield etc...
No-one seems to learn anything, not the clubs, the EFL or the FA. Unfortunately it affects people's lives (both supporters and local businesses) as well as the wider football community.
Jim said it before, competition payments should be different, staggered or post-seasons rather than all at the beginning.

Re: Southend facing another tough week
9It's a disincentive to Premier League clubs helping out if the money gets pocketed by people like the last owners of Bury and Macclesfield. Perhaps grants could be kept in trust and clubs have to apply with details of what it's going on.
Re: Southend facing another tough week
10Good. Nasty little club been breaking the rules for years, with equally nasty supporters, a handful of whom are (hopefully) going to be banged up for manslaughter soon, after what they did to that poor Cambridge lad.
I hope they go bust and disappear.

12So, just brinkmanship then.NearlyDead wrote:They've paid off their tax arrears today
Re: Southend facing another tough week
13I'd say there's a fair chance they haven't. They may have repaid the petitioned arrears but have they kept up to date with tax, VAT and NIC accrued in the meantime? I expect a further petition soon, certainly the past evidence points towards repeated financial forgetfulness.NearlyDead wrote:They've paid off their tax arrears today
