Tuesday 9th February.
Newport County v Southend Utd.
Meetings between County and Southend date back as far as 1920 when both clubs met on Christmas Day 25th December. The clubs have met on ninety nine occasions for competitive matches and it's a virtual equal record with County winning forty four and Southend forty one.
Meetings between the clubs since 2013:
2013 / 2014:
Newport County 3-1 Southend.
Conor Washington put County in front midway through the first half.
Defender Ben Coker leveled for the Shrimpers in the forty first minute. County regained the lead before the break through a header from Andrew Hughes during injury time. Ismail Yakubu headed home a third in the fifty third minute.
Southend 0-0 Newport County.
This mid season draw put County within seven points of the play-offs.
This draw was an eighth straight unbeaten L2 run for the Shrimpers. Robbie Willmott missed a penalty for County early stages of the second half, shooting wide. Willmott missed another chance during injury time, hitting the goalie when clean through on goal.
2014 / 2015:
Newport County 1-0 Southend.
After a goalless first half, Joe Day saved a penalty from Southend's Myles Weston. Mark Byrne got the games only goal on seventy four minutes, his first goal for County.
Southend 2-0 Newport County.
This was a third straight defeat for County and four games without a win. Defender Cian Bolger put Southend ahead in first half injury time. Stephen McLaughlin doubled the lead early stages of the second half. County had only three games remaining but missed out on the play-offs, gaining just three points from those games.
2017 / 2018:
League Cup R1.
Southend 0-2 Newport County.
Two goals from Shawn McCoulsky during the first fifteen minutes of the second half gave County an unexpected victory at Southend, one tier above them.

Ex Newport County defender Nathan Ralph, currently with Southend, will miss the game due to a knee injury, causing him to miss the remainder of the season.
Ifollow commentators may get a touch confused as Southend also have a Demetriou in defender and captain Jason, a Cypriot international.
Red cards:
County have competed in thirty five matches since the opening weekend of the season.
1. One red card has been issued during eleven of those thirty five matches:
2. Eight of the reds have been issued at Rodney Parade.
3. The first seven of the reds were issued to County's opponents, six at Rodney Parade.
4. The other four have all been issued to County players within the latest five matches.
Re: Grandstand: Exiles v Southend
2Great stats as ever. Do we think the pitch will be too frozen to play tonight? Obviously hope it isn’t but you know how much MF loves a postponed game!
Re: Grandstand: Exiles v Southend
3Whilst sub zero temps are forecast this evening, haven't abandoned all hope of it being postponed yet. No frost with me after last night. A little bit of cloud cover and a stiff 'lazy' wind appeared to have prevented that, although I've had a very light sprinkling of snow.Countymax wrote:Great stats as ever. Hoping the same for the 'port?
Re: Grandstand: Exiles v Southend
7Assuming the game does go ahead tonight, the match referee is Paul Howard who has officiated at Rodney Parade once this season already. On that occasion, he sent off Harrogate's Josh Falkingham.

8Sand as with all solids is already frozen. It is the water in the sand and the grass and the mud which freezes.Collars wrote:Sand doesn't freeze does it?

9Some excellent, articulate and insightful pre-match reading here in the local Southend rag.
