Grandstand: Port Vale v Exiles

1
Saturday 13th February:
Port Vale v Newport County.

Meetings between both clubs date back to 1938 / 1939. The first match was played at ''The Old Recreation Ground'', Hanley, one of Vales previous stadiums. Vale won that match 2-1. This was only the second league game of the season. Vale did the double on County this season but despite that double loss, County finished the season as champions of the Third Division South, gaining promotion to the second tier for what, to date, is the only season they've been higher than tier three, being relegated the following season.
Since County's return to the FL in 2013, the clubs have met on six occasions.

2017 / 2018:
Newport County 1-1 Port Vale:
Matty Dolan gave County the lead on fifty four minutes, his first goal for the club. Half time substitute Anton Forrester gained a point for the Valiants, scoring with around ten minutes remaining.

Port Vale 0-0 Newport County:
A sixth straight league game for County without a win and a fourth straight game without scoring. With twelve games remaining, County were nine points outside of the play-offs.

2018 / 2019:
Port Vale 1-2 Newport County:
Scot Bennett opened the scoring for County on eighteen minutes. Tom Pope leveled for the Valiants on twenty seven minutes, setting a club record for the number of goals scored by an individual player at Vale Park. Dan Butler scored what proved to be the winner, early stages of the second half.

Newport County 0-0 Port Vale:
This game was three days after the FA Cup R4 game at Middlesbrough. A deserved draw for Vale who had James Gibbons sent off late on. With eighteen to play, County were seven points outside of the play-offs.

2019 / 2020:

Newport County 1-0 Port Vale
Jamille Matt scored the games only goal on seventy seven minutes, some fifteen minutes after replacing Joss Labadie. Moments after taking the lead, Padraig Amond missed a penalty, saved by Vale goalkeeper Scott Brown.

2020 / 2021:
The game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw until eighty fifth minute substitute Kevin Ellison tapped home deep into injury time. Vale had Leon Legge sent off midway through the second half. County were now three points clear at the top after twelve games.
