Re: Frank Worthington
2Hinckley. He just stayed in the centre circle and sprayed passes round. Of all the players in his generation I'm pleased I got to see, he tops the list. RIP.
Re: Frank Worthington
3One of the all time greats.
He stood out as an individual.
Loved trying to emulate him as kid.
You don't get too many sporting characters these days, too much PC etc.
One of my favourite goals v Ipswich, we tried doing it as kids. (Without much success).

4Absolutely spot on George. He was class that afternoon, player/manager as I recall. RIP Worthington F.George Street-Bridge wrote:Hinckley. He just stayed in the centre circle and sprayed passes round. Of all the players in his generation I'm pleased I got to see, he tops the list. RIP.
Re: Frank Worthington
5I remember that too. Somerton Park on a Sunday, I believe. I recall a moment of magic when he received a pass behind him as he was running down the line. He backheeled it over his shoulder without breaking stride and just continued his run in full control of the ball.
Re: Frank Worthington
7Definitely Somerton Jim, I remember it well. Was only a nipper but all those games my dad took me to really stick in the mind.UPTHEPORT wrote:I thought it was Spytty

8Am I right in thinking we couldn't charge gate money but were invited to buy a programme as a charity donation?
Re: Frank Worthington
9I'm not sure on that one, I was able to keep my pocket money in those days.excessbee wrote:Am I right in thinking we couldn't charge gate money but were invited to buy a programme as a charity donation?

Re: Frank Worthington
11You are indeed correct, the Sunday trading laws prohibited us from charging for entry so buying a program was "compulsory". 60p for entry and program was it?excessbee wrote:Am I right in thinking we couldn't charge gate money but were invited to buy a programme as a charity donation?
Re: Frank Worthington
12I remember Somerton against Merthyr on a Sunday,WC 74,it was entry by programme,I don’t think it was still that law in the 90’s when we played Hinckley.
Re: Frank Worthington
13Worthington, who was the one-time son in law of 1960’s Swansea goalkeeper Noel Dwyer, was only player-manager of Hinckley for some seven months.
He played against AFC twice in the 1990-91 season one of which was a 3-0 home defeat which, as has been pointed out, was orchestrated by Worthington.
The game was played on a Saturday but there was a charity angle as the November game (to quote the programme cover) was “dedicated to the BBC Children in Need Appeal ”

Re: Frank Worthington
14I only went to the game at Hinckley but the home game was definitely also a Saturday. Sundays were normal admission by then, I remember late in the season we played at Corby on a Saturday and King's Lynn the next day. Entry that season would have been about a fiver?
Re: Frank Worthington
15I certainly remember entry to the game being linked to a charity and was thinking it was something like Children in Need. It's the kind of quirky mgatch fact that sticks in the memory.
Edit: Done some detective work. November 24th 1990, which was indeed a Saturday.
