Newport County v Carlisle Utd.

Meetings between both clubs since County returned to Football League action in 2013:


2014 / 2015.
Carlisle 2-3 Newport County.
This was the first meeting between both clubs in twenty six years.
County had the advantage at half time with the only goal coming from the head of Yan Klukowski. Ismail Yakubu increased the lead shortly after the break. Brad Pott got one back for the Cumbrians shortly after before sub Shaun Jeffers sealed victory during injury time. Well into injury time, David Amoo reduced the deficit. Jamie Stephen's played the full match in goal for County, his first appearance of the season. After nineteen games each, County were seventh while Carlisle were twenty second.

Newport County 2-1 Carlisle.
What should have been a comfortable victory for County wasn't to be.
Strugglers Carlisle almost finished the first half in front having taken the lead in the eleventh minute from Courtney Melppen-Walter. It wasn't to be as the Cumbrians conceded a penalty just before the break which Adam Chapman converted. Lee Minshull got the games only other goal with a shot from outside the box.
After twenty four games each, County were in fourth position, four points behind leaders Wycombe, while Carlisle were twenty second.

2015 / 2016:
Carlisle 0-1 Newport County.
Having gained just two points from their opening eight league games, victory at last for County in game nine.
The games only goal came from Tyler Blackwood, on loan from QPR, midway through the second half. County remained bottom, a point behind Dagenham & Redbridge and Crawley while Carlisle were mid table. However, this match proved to be manager Terry Butcher's penultimate game in charge as he was sacked after the following games 3-0 loss against Crawley at Rodney Parade.

Newport County 1-0 Carlisle.
The games only goal came from Scott Boden during the earlier stages of the second half.
After John Sheridan's short reign as manager, this was Warren Feeney's fifth game in charge from which County gained ten points.
After twenty nine games, County were now seven points from the drop while Carlisle were mid table after twenty seven games.

2016 / 2017:
Newport County 2-0 Carlisle.
This match kicked off early afternoon as Wales were facing Argentina at the Principality Stadium later afternoon time. Carlisle started this match unbeaten in their first fifteen league games. Josh Sheehan got the first very early on before Rhys Healey got the second around seventy two minutes. This was the second of three successive victories for County, the only positive note of Graham Westley's reign as County manager. County remained bottom while Carlisle remained second.

Carlisle 2-1 Newport County.
This was County's penultimate game of the season, desperate for points to avoid relegation while Carlisle still had a chance of the play-offs.
County had the advantage come half time thanks to a header from Mickey Demetriou on twelve minutes. It was between County and Hartlepool for relegation along with Leyton Orient County had a five points lead over Hartlepool at half time.However, two early second half goals from Jabo Ibehre and Nicky Adams meant that County's feat would be decided after their final game of the season against Notts County. With Hartlepool losing 1-0 at Cheltenham, County had a two point advantage over Hartlepool but an inferior goal difference.

2017 / 2018.
Newport County 3-3 Carlisle.
Shawn McCoulsky put County ahead shortly before the break. Two early goals in the second half from Luke Joyce and Kelvin Etuhu. Matt Dolan leveled the score from a free kick before ex County right back Tom Miller regained the lead for Carlisle. With around twenty two minutes remaining, Matt Dolan scored his second from a free kick. The draw left both clubs around mid table.

Carlisle 1-1 Newport County.
This was the final game of the season for both clubs and Keith Curle's last game of four successive seasons as Carlisle manager.
Mark Ellis put the Cumbrians ahead on fourteen minutes. Padraig Amond scored with around eight minutes of the first half remaining.
County finished the season in eleventh position with sixty four points, one position and three points behind Carlisle.

2018 / 2019:
Carlisle 3-2 Newport County.
County trailed by two goals after only twelve minutes, Jamie Devitt getting both. Padraig Amond reduced the deficit around seven minutes before the break.
Dan Butler leveled the scores with around five minutes to go and it appeared County had earned a point until Danny Grainger scored for the Cumbrians during injury time.
After seventeen games each, County were sixth while Carlisle were eleventh.

Newport County 2-0 Carlisle.
Adebayo Azeez scored his first goal for County after fourteen minutes. Padraig Amond got the second midway through the second half. With both clubs still in reach of the play-offs, County were twelfth with twelve to play while Carlisle were ninth with eleven to play.

2019 / 2020:
Newport County 1-0 Carlisle.
A very poor performance from County, somewhat fortunate to take three points with a screamer of a goal from George Nurse during injury time 90+.

Carlisle 2-0 Newport County.
Both goals came in the first half from Omari Patrick and a penalty by Josh Kayode, conceded by Dale Gorman. Shortly before the break, County had Ryan Inniss sent off after a bad challenge on Josh Kayode.
This game proved to be the final game of the season for both clubs and many others due to covid19 and the final placings were decided on a points per game system.

2020 / 2021:
Carlisle 3-2 Newport County.
Carlisle were by far the better side over the ninety are were worthy winners.
Ryan Haynes conceded a penalty after fifteen minutes of which Lewis Alessandra converted.
Two second half goals from John Mellish put the Cumbrians three up with around ten minutes remaining.
Jamie Devitt, with his first goal for County, reduced the deficit with around seven minutes remaining.
Josh Sheehan scored a second during injury time but it was too late.

I read the team selection as one forward returning who was ineligible last game and an attacking midfielder for a defensive one?

Maynard wasn’t available v Mansfield after scoring in the game before. I’m glad he’s back today.
