How does everyone pronounce these words?

Tooth as in look not as in Luke

Noo bul.

The ones that always get me regarding Newport are;
Garage as in garij
Castle as in Cassull
School as in skoowul
and the best, Bettws as in Bettis.

That one always gets me when I see it mentioned on TV. My kids laugh at me. It’s Bettis for goodness sake.

No idea on Pill, Norm. I guess, as with Lliswerry, Newportonian is a dialect full of broken rules.

Maesglas? Mays glass. But would a proper taff call it mice glass, I wonder?

By the way, my mum used to say "Bettwus". Cringeworthy.

More generally, I dislike Welsh neighbours referring to "going to the village" when we live in a town, "going into town" when talking about visiting Newport or Cardiff cities (when we were allowed to do so).

But as far as I'm aware this is an unusual melding of an ancient saxon word 'Pill' which is a tidal river or coastal inlet, pronounced as in English rhyming with Mill or Till; and the Welsh name Gwenlly prounced Gwhenthlee

The one's that have amused me include hearing people say quimbran for Cwmbran and A bert us wig for Abertysswg

Malpus is apparently a Newput "thing".

Thinking back, many years ago I lived on Pillmawr Road. Only once did I hear someone pronounce it Pichllmawer.

I can remember asking for Bass a leg Rd when I was looking for digs when I started at art college.

How about Allt-yr-yn?
