The ones that always get me regarding Newport are;
Garage as in garij
Castle as in Cassull
School as in skoowul
and the best, Bettws as in Bettis.

That one always gets me when I see it mentioned on TV. My kids laugh at me. It’s Bettis for goodness sake.

But as far as I'm aware this is an unusual melding of an ancient saxon word 'Pill' which is a tidal river or coastal inlet, pronounced as in English rhyming with Mill or Till; and the Welsh name Gwenlly prounced Gwhenthlee
