For that Kane effort, did you notice that he had to get it on his right foot from a yard! If he’d just taken the chance with his left he would have saved a precious fraction of a second and would have scored, I just don’t get pros with one functional leg!pembsexile wrote:England had their chances. They could have had it sewn up in the first half. For Kane to hit the post from two feet (admittedly a tight angle), well. They should have put a few away then. Could have been 3-0 up.
After their previous two games I thought it would be Croatia that tired, not England. Just think that at 1-1 England reverted to type. Desperation and hope. They did far better than I expected though, well done.
Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
362For once England seem a nice bunch of lads and impossible to dislike. In the past how even an Englishman could support a team which contained John Terry is beyond me.So for that reason I don't feel any great joy at England losing.
Relief at England losing. And only because can you imagine how insufferable our neighbours would be if they ever did win it?

Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
363Now the media are coming clear about the apparently poisonous atmosphere around the camp for years and years it's interesting to speculate on who was behind it - Terry? Rooney? Gerrard? All of them?
Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
364IFS BUTS AND MAYBES.
So disappointed . Just seemed to loose the desire to go "all out" after the equaliser
But great credit to Gareth Southgate..he will get better as will the band of talented youngsters in the squad.

Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
365Rather than losing the desire I think England’s high tempo tactics meant that they were blowing through their @rses after an hour.
As soon as Croatia adapted their tactics in the second half England disintegrated. It was like watching a beautiful person take off their makeup to be exposed as a bit ugly after all.

Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
366Just read an interesting stat. Though we all know you can bend stats any way to fit an agenda.
England managed 6 attempts on target from open play in their 6 games played. That’s the same number as Saudi Arabia managed in 3 games.

Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
367The number off-target would be interesting, I suspect disproportionately high.
On a different level but Sterling reminded me of what I saw of Lamar Reynolds - blinding pace but undone by hesitation at the vital moment.

Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
368Just when I'd hoped to have heard the last about England in the world cup, I realise that there is still the 3rd/4th place play off.
What chance England for that game?

Re: Apparently there's a football tournament in Russia
369Yep, all of them apparently plus Ashley Cole and Rio. Lots of club cliques and no cohesion. Add mercenary and/or has-been managers to the mix and you have the laughing stock that the England footy team became but now we've restored some pride a la Wales in the last Euros.George Street-Bridge wrote:Now the media are coming clear about the apparently poisonous atmosphere around the camp for years and years it's interesting to speculate on who was behind it - Terry? Do you think that Kane is injured? he seemed to be playing as an attacking midfielder for the last two games.

371At Mansfield we should show our sympathy and brotherhood towards our neighbours by giving them a rousing rendition of "Three Lions".
