Coin update - the 4th £2 coin in the RAF series of 5 was recently released (Sea King helicopter) just one more to go for the full set. I think that is the new Lightning Mk2. The Royal Mint say that should be released later this month.

2nd new Paddington bear 50p coin just been issued as well.

Still no news though about the supposed 2017 issue for circulation of the £2 coins - Jane Austen and WW1 Aviation. The banks appear to be holding on to them.

I picked up a 2012 Charles Dickens £2 coin today. At first glance it seemed quite dull and uninspiring but now I think the design is quite clever.

Any chance it's worth more than £2?

Hi DeePee, unfortunately it is not worth much more than face value. Probably may get between £3 £3.50 if you sell it on eBay. A word of warning if you are trying to buy this coin. For some obscure reason this particular coin is being touted as an error coin on aBay and selling for up to £1000. This is because the edge lettering is apparently the wrong way up. As I have said before, this is nonsense. The edge lettering is a random process occurring during production at the Royal Mint. Please do not be fooled by these scams.

I've been refereeing in a local 6 a side league and the teams taking part all pay their entry fees in cash. Often have £200 in coins to count and started to notice a few unusual ones. Including a few old style £1 coins - b@#$ds!

However, it must be noted that these coins are quite rare. The silver and gold 50p coins mentioned will be part of a commemorative set for that year or purchased separately. They would have been available from the Royal Mint at the time or specialist coin dealers. If you have a commemorative set from 2009 it will contain the Kew Gardens coin and be worth something. If you have purchased the gold/silver coin separately at the time you will be on a winner. Check your cupboards etc but you should know if you have one. A word of caution - the set must be 'proof' or the individual coin proof or brilliant uncirculated. The Royal Mint do not sell circulated coins.

The Royal Mint are actually being a bit crafty. They are an arm of the Exchequer and are there to release coins and make a profit if they can. I note they half own the selling company that the report mentioned. The Kew Gardens has the lowest mintage of all the 50p coins (apart from the specialist Blue Peter 2009 Olympic high jump) and is worth quite a lot in circulated condition.

The trick is to buy a yearly proof commemorative set and hope the mintage for a coin within it is low for that year. If it is it will become scarce. The Royal Mint are acutely aware of this and for some coins they do not release the mintage figures for the year for particular coins for some considerable time. For example they have not even released the Aviation and Jane Austen £2 coins from 2017 yet, never mind the mintages. When I enquiried they said the release date is up to the banks and Post Offices, hm, yeh, right.

What was interesting from the article is that the writer said that coin collecting as a hobby is on the increase - that is true, even though coins are slowly being withdrawn from use as we move to an electronic cashless society.

Coin update 9 October. The last in the 5 set series of RAF coins is now available - F35 Lightening. Still no news on the release date of 2017 £2 Jane Austen or WW1 Aviation.

Just been given a 50p coin, 2017, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'.....probably not worth anything other than face value.

Keep it mate. It is part of 4 Beatrix Potter 50p coins released in 2017. Also part of a bigger 13 part Beatrix Potter set - 5 from 2016 and another 4 from 2018. It makes a great starting point for coin collectors to enter the hobby and make up a set.

The individual sets with the corresponding album sell for considerably more than face value on eBay if you aren't interested in collecting. There are people who make money out of it. I'm not one of them though. Mine are for enjoyment and for passing on to my grandkids.

Also, you could trade what you have with other like minded folks. Me, even. Great fun.

The new £1 coin was issued in 2017 but many millions were minted in 2016 but not made available until 2017. For the anoraks - look out for error coins, that is, they have the date of 2017 on one side and 2016 around the rim on the other. They are out there. Would make a great contribution to your retirement fund.

Also, keep a look out for the Isaac Newton 50p. They are very scarce, mintage figures are not yet available but the word on the street is that in a few years they will be worth quite a lot of money. Could be Kew Gardens v2 all over again.

You most certainly do Norm. The normal date you will see on the LH underside of the Queen's head, quite clearly. On the 'tails' side the date is impregnated on a line 12 times around the inside of the coin. You will need a magnifying glass (jewellers loupe) to see it. The dates are located immediately under the raised rim approximately 1mm from the edge of the coin. Just to be clear, it is not on the edge but on the flat part. They seem to be extremely difficult to find. The Royal Mint and HM Treasury announced this week that an extra 2.6 million of these coins were released into circulation recently.

My own take is that people are looking out for them and as soon as they find one they either put it in their collection or give it to family/friends for their collection. On a smaller scale this is exactly what happened to the Olympic 50p piece coins. Not many of them around now. Bloody coin collectors have a lot to answer for
