Easy, the Council as they missed a fantastic opportunity to secure a stadium for the benefit of the City.

If I recall correctly the council promised a football stadium after they sold off Somerton Park. They subsequently provided an athletics stadium less than 10 miles away from Cwmbran athletics stadium.

Two minority sport stadiums within a 10 mile radius in Gwent.

At the time that Newport Stadium was built, Newport AFC were not playing in Newport. That made it very difficult for the Council to justify building it to a high standard as a football ground.If you want to blame someone blame the FAW for their hostility towards our club and forcing us into exile.

Yes, it was widely reported that the ground was intended to be Conference-standard for the time, with the stand running the full length of the pitch.

We were still lucky they put the jumping pits at one end rather than in front of the stand, we might have wound up with something like Chelmsford where the touchline is about 50 yards from the stand.

You may well be right, the most obvious club in an as bad/ worse position to us regarding grounds, Coventry City, were knocked out in the first round.

Good point. Forgetting about them. We are not unique then.

Oxford United's time at the Kassam also seems to be limited, but they aren't under immediate pressure. It seems the owner can make a sum from developing the site which the club sees as overvaluing it as a stadium. I think they still have six or seven years.

No, but at the time the blueprints were put together we were. I specifically remember seeing them up on the wall in the old Moreton Lounge at Somerton Park before we were exiled for a second time.

So basically, when we were exiled the Council thought "**** 'em".

The FAW and Newport Council have both contributed to our total stagnant state off the pitch over the past 35 years or so.

How was it justified in Swansea and any other town/city where the councils have supported stadiums?

Because it's part of any self-respecting town or city's heritage and identity.
