This is of course really sad news.

He came to Port Vale as a fresh-faced 20 year old loanee. Vale were hopeless back then and Lee immediately stood out as one of the better players. "He won't stick around", everyone said. But he signed permanently and stayed for three years. He started as a fullback, graduated to centre half, and even chipped in with the very occasional goal. He was popular on and off the field. When he chose to move on there was a sense that he was destined for bigger and better things, though in fact he spent his career in the lower leagues.

He seemed a nice man, and he was certainly a decent footballer.
