Minimum Alcohol Price per unit

(I'm what I think of as a moderate drinker (2 or 3 or 4 beers each Fri/Sat/Sun).)
What are people's thoughts on this new law of alcohol costing a minimum of 50p per unit?
Presumably this is being done to - well, I'm not 100% sure who in the drinking/not-yet-drinking community is being targeted - although I guess *most drinkers are going to be out of pocket.
* pubs already charge more than 50p per unit so if you only drink there you'll be unaffected.
A similar scheme in Scotland is being hailed as a success though I don't know how they measure its success. Is it less vomit on street corners on a Sunday morning? Or simply less alcohol sold? Surely if it's the latter then they could charge a fiver a unit and have done with it.
