Sounding like the Argus comments on here “ why do we have to pay to park ?” etc etc. Because it’s a f*cking city ffs - what city have you travelled to that doesn’t charge for parking? So the council pays for free buses for Xmas shoppers and guess what? That’s wrong as well. Instead of blaming the council try blaming this dreadful Government that have stuffed the pockets of their mates with stolen cash instead of funding services.

Free bus journeys in December
Posted on Monday 29th November 2021

A festive scheme to encourage people to use local businesses in a sustainable way in the run-up to Christmas is being launched by Newport City Council

It will be paying for people's local bus journeys on scheduled bus services between 1 and 24 December.

Free bus travel will be available on all journeys that start and end within the city boundaries on services run by a registered operator.

Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, said: "This initiative is aimed at providing a boost for our wonderful local businesses as well as encouraging the use of more sustainable transport.

"Buses are a great way of getting around the city to do your shopping or to meet up with friends and family. We have excellent businesses, including many fantastic independent traders, that deserve everyone's support.

"The focus on the climate and the future has never been greater. We all can do our bit by staying local as much as possible and using alternatives to our cars.

"This will also help those within our communities who struggle financially, especially at Christmas, as they try to put food on the table and buy presents for their loved ones.

"I very much hope we will see more people on our buses this December, in our shops and hospitality venues. Please remember, however, to keep safe, wear masks where required and follow the other guidelines to protect yourselves, your loved ones and others."

The scheme will operate alongside existing concessionary fare eligibility. Journeys that start or terminate outside the city boundary would be excluded and subject to the regular fare.

Whilst Cwmbran isn't a city it does have free parking.
It is most probably the best thing that the council did years ago when the town was being developed, was to offer free parking.
This is why people actually travel up from Newport, down and across the valleys to shop in Cwmbran.
So I can see why Newport are trying to induce people to come into Newport with free bus travel in December.
It has nothing to do with Welsh or national governments.
