It’s an American game and we’re all used to seeing Yank words. I would be surprised to hear of any Americans who have heard of this word let alone sampled it.
Then you would be surprised to know that both sweet ( non alcoholic) cider and hard (alcoholic) cider is not uncommon in the apple growing areas of New England and is often drunk when the weather gets colder, spiced and warmed, especially at thanksgiving and Christmas. Apparently a cider press was transported there on the Mayflower.
