That's because a business can lose money as long as it has money coming in in one lump after the accounts to replace it. Likewise it can make a profit, and then have to pay more than that profit, after the accounting period.

Of course it does, and the league has playoffs, which are in effect a cup competition. So you have to cater for both, when assembling a squad, and deciding priorities. The directors cannot rely on cup income, nor can they rely on player sales, or better still player sales that have come from our academy. But it all forms part of the overall policy, and what needs to be prioritised.
