PPE, or lack thereof and difficulty sourcing it, was not just a UK issue. It affected the rest of Europe and North and South America to pretty much the same degree as it did the UK. Pretty much all these countries have/had JIT (or near-JIT) delivery systems in place. The issue is that such a system doesn't do too well in a once-in-a-century global pandemic when everyone is chasing the same suppliers at the same time.

Rubbish. Other nations have handled it far better than we have and have a lower death rate to show for it. The government has reacted too slowly too often and lives have been lost because of it.

Exactly and losing the cooperation of many by not sacking Cummings. Incidentally Welsh track and trace very efficient, no outsourcing all local.

Yes, but but but.....

The UK carried out a full desk-top pandemic exercise in 2017, and the top few recommendations were:

- Stock-pile PPE;
- Order more ventilators,
- Improve the pay and number of NHS staff.

Cameron then chose to put the report on a shelf to gather dust and regard the recommendations as ‘expensive luxuries’.

Plus the determined austerity project that drove large numbers onto the street and into poverty. It’s no accident that the poor are suffering most at the moment. Planned neglect and callous disregard for human life. England loves the Tories and the monarchy though and seem to love living under the heal of the establishment. That’s why the Celtic nations need to go independent, they never vote Tory but always get a Tory government.

I agree entirely regarding contingency planning - but Cameron left office in 2016.

That's a bit of a simplistic viewpoint of England. England currently prefers a Tory government to the Corbyn basket case alternative, but chose a labour government from 1997 - 2010.

Ironically Wales voted against independence last time, whilst also voting to leave the EU, so more patriotic than the cottage burners would have you believe, although having benefitted greatly from EU grants, you have to wonder why......?
If I hadn't lived in England longer than I lived in Newport I'd be looking inwards at the dogmatic loyalty to Welsh Labour party that appears to have delivered very little outside of Cardiff first, before blaming everything on England.

I also follow Welsh politics from England and it always amuses me that all the Welsh Tories have to offer is yapping at Welsh Labour - probably be even worse now Andrew RT Davies is back to replace that other blowhard - but they are flummoxed when Welsh Labour is in step with Westminster on the virus.

This thread has obviously gone off track, and has become one of party political beliefs. To try and get it back on track and football related I will ask:
Does any one believe crowds are likely to be admitted back to games before the end of this season?, or is it far too early to say?

I'd say no chance. I think clubs will have to plan for substantially smaller crowds even when restrictions are lifted, people will have re-thought their lives.

There's just a glimmer of an outside chance (as the vaccine is a game changer, as far as we know currently) you could get limited crowds again this season.

I was thinking we'd come out of lockdown slower than we did last time (given the variant that is causing the problem is so more transmissible now), meaning there would be no chance at all, but vaccination will likely offset that to a degree. So you can probably still take the timeline for limited crowds in football from last year's lockdown playout. It was about 5 months from start of lockdown to limited crowds at sports venues (Oval I think). That would make it early May from Jan 2021 lockdown start.

So, say, around the last 2 weeks of the season might just be a possibility. Playoffs perhaps.

But I wouldn't hold my breath for this season. More likely is limited crowds in 21/22 season start.

And even with vaccines in vulnerable groups, an awful lot of the adult population (and all U-18s) will be unvaccinated late into 2021 and early 2022. Restrictions of some sort will be the norm for the rest of this year at least.

Interesting that you have alluded to people re-thinking their lives as I was thinking the same. Even if/when limited crowds are allowed to return will some, especially the elderly, vaccinated or not, still be reluctant to do so?

Absolutely. I hate seeing parents towing kids on trolleys behind bikes. They can take every conceivable precaution, but the child is still completely at the mercy of the worst driver they encounter on any given day.

I need the handrail to get up the steps to my ST seat in the Bisley. Will a steward wipe it every time someone uses it? No, so obviously the prudent thing would be to sanitise your own hands before use to be public-spirited and after for your own safety. But can you enjoy a game in that situation?

I have received a letter from NHS Wales explaining the timetable for vaccinations. We are currently still in tier 2,which is over 80’s and frontline health and care workers.Tier 3 will be over 75’s.The list goes down to tier 9 which is over 50’s,this will take some weeks to get to tier 9 then,JCVL will advise when the rest of the population,49 years down to infants, will get theirs.I seem to remember a minister mentioning September, was that the date for everyone or just tier 9,either way there won’t be crowds this season.
