Grandstand: Sutton United v Newport County (Away)

1

Today we take on a side which play a more old fashioned style of the game, they are bigger and more physical than the majority of our squad, so we will have to be at our very best to ensure they don't stop us from playing our style of football.

There has only been 1 recorded league game between the 2 sides, result as follows.

Games won: 1
Games drawn: 0
Games lost: 0

07 Dec 2021 Newport County v Sutton United W 3-2 League Two
18 Apr 2022 Sutton United v Newport County ? ?-? League Two

Come on James. You may be a very good coach at championship level, but today's the day for earning your stripes as a league 2 manager. No more talk of process and collective. Shake them up. Make some changes. You keep mentioning the squad of 26, well use them. Go for it. No more possession football in our own penalty area. If Cooper is 80% fit then play him. Give Ellison some game time. No more timid indecisiveness like Good Friday.

Not disagreeing with any of that. Would stress also that the players starting today need to take more responsibility and show a more positive and less timid approach also. It's not all down to the management. Believe we have reached 'it's now or never' point if we are to make the playoffs.

Totally agree regarding the players taking responsibility. However, it must be JR who is telling the keeper to give the ball to a CB in the 6 yard box and play keep ball with the other defenders. I noticed on Saturday that when Day rolled the ball to a defender we had 4 players in or just outside our penalty area. There was then a big gap to the midfield on the halfway line. JR needs to remember he has L2 defenders who may not have the skills to do what he wants them to do. After all, even PL players get in a muddle and gift goals when "messing about" in their penalty area. Our goal came from probably the only time we got the ball upfield quickly.

It seems that Guardiola has been the instigator of this fad for footballing goalkeepers. Klopp has joined him. Playing it out from the six yard box indeed. Hopefully after the debacle with the City goalkeeper on the weekend, this fad will be put to bed. Unless it is the teams playing us of course.

I actually agree with it - with one proviso - you have to have a goalkeeper that is a good footballer and defenders that can play in mid-field. I'm not sure we have either at present.
I know what you mean and it can work well. But at times (for some teams) it almost seems like it's mandatory and results in 'give away goals'. Just need to use it
when it's appropriate during the course of the game.
Just saying.

Like most tactics it’s about having the skills and the nous on the pitch to know when and how to adapt to them.
Sometimes the long hoof ball works to effect if you got the tall guys to play it, sometimes you use your speedy wingers. Sometimes play out from the back.
Another is varying set piece and corner play.
The sides that can adjust as the game goes on quite often come out on top.
This is true in all sports.
Those that just stick to the same old tactics are invariably sussed and negated by the opposition.
