Charles Reep, the man who brought stats to the English game.
A fascinating read... IMHO.
For anyone who is interested in this sort of thing I would recommend The Numbers Game by Chris Anderson and David Sally. Available in all good bookshops, as they say. It's subtitled 'Why everything you know about football is wrong'. Some of the insights really surprised me. Topical for this point in the season is that when bringing in new players always identify your weakest link and strengthen that. It's much more effective than bringing in a new striker, which is what loads of managers do.
